With entertaining season upon us, we think the simple act of gathering with family and friends at the dining table to have a meal is a way of showing our love for them, of connecting and just having a good time. Of course good food is key; but we like to dress the table too because it says you’ve gone the extra step to make the experience even more memorable, from beginning to end! So here’s our guide on how to set a gorgeous table for the holidays and beyond!
Set A Theme
Theming your table is a great place to start to get the creative juices flowing in terms of how you want your table to look. Are the plates you plan on using plain or patterned? Colourful or neutral? Is there a specific feel you’re going for? Casual or formal?
Centerpieces
These are the decorative accents that really elevate the look of your table. Don’t just think flowers are your only option for this though, Mother Nature has endless variety, whether you’re bringing in vines, greenery or other organic elements, like branches, shells, stones; even fruits and vegetables can be used. Then consider if you will have one centrally placed centerpiece or a few placed along the length of your table. Depending on the size of your table 3 or 5 (rule of odd numbers in design) works well.
TIP: Remember to keep these low enough so they do not obstruct the view of your guests across the table.
Tablecloths, Runners and Placemats
Believe it or not, a tablecloth isn’t always mandatory. Sure if you’ve got a beautiful tablecloth you want to use, go ahead. But a table runner down the centre or individual placemats can be just as impactful. You can also combine these options to add more depth and texture.
Under Layers
Start with a charger upon which to place your plates. Immediately it elevates everything. These can be actual plates, wood blocks, large leaves or straw mats. Use your imagination- once your dinner plate can sit on it, it’s perfect.
Mix and Match
There is no rule that says you have to stick with one set of plates. In fact, we recommend you have at least 2 different plate sets in your collection to give you versatility when setting your table. They can be tone on tone or completely contrasting.
Lighting
There is a certain ambience that candlelight adds to your table that just cannot be duplicated. You have many options here and can use taper, pillar or votive/tea light candles. Tapers in candlesticks tend to be more formal and traditional in look, while pillars in hurricanes or glass cylinders more contemporary. Votives/tea lights on the other hand, due to their smaller scale, can be scattered all over your table. Be sure to think about safety, so place them in appropriate containers and away from greenery, etc. Battery operated fairy lights are another safe option that can be used to great effect.
Extra-Extra
For special and formal occasions, it’s always nice for your guests to have a little “take-away” gift or a little indulgent treat at their place setting. This could be chocolates or some baked good or spice mix (especially if it’s home made), mini/travel size personal items like candles, body/hand cream or small accessory. And these can be one per couple or one each. The point is something fun, unexpected and inexpensive. It could even be a card with a little trivia or question to spark conversation among your guests.
